About the Voices Aloud

Early in 2009 Hughie and Jenny Barford put into action a long held ambition of setting up a local choir for anyone who wanted to sing regardless of any previous experience or ability - from ages 16 to 70!

A BBC radio appeal and advert placed in the 4 Locals magazine produced a large response-- the phone did not stop ringing! Within two weeks he had a list of around 80 people interested.

A date was set for a preliminary meeting in October 2009 where Hughie could  talk in some detail about his views and aspirations for the future, and to answer questions from attendees.

The evening finished with everyone participating in a short version of the Beach Boys song "In My Room" after which over 60 people signed up to join. Unfortunately more ladies than men! (an ongoing problem for all  choirs.)

Through hard work, commitment and loyalty from all members of the choir during this first year, the choir is now 50 strong and performed its sell-out début concert at the Masque Theatre in October 2010.

Voices Aloud 2011
Voices Aloud is now three years old and is really going places. So far we have entered five competitions winning four out of five. Our last performance was at the Masque Theatre Kettering - the response was fantastic.

Just to let you know some of the feedback that I heard -  “Stunning” and “Sensational”, “The singing was beautiful”, “ We felt they were all having fun and enjoying themselves whilst singing”

It's NOT Raining Men...

We are very keen to attract more men into the choir, in particularly if you're a bass. If you, or someone you know, has often thought that you'd like to sing in a choir and enjoy a very rewarding past-time with like minded people, then please give us a call.

Oundle Festival 2012

Once again Voices Aloud had a great day at Oundle. In their first category they took a  1st place with distinction and cup. In their second category, they also gained a distinction and 2nd  place to a national finalist.

Manchester February 2013

The choir has been accepted, and is looking forward to competing at national level in Manchester in February 2013.

Voices Aloud wins all three sections at Kettering Eisteddfod 2012

Voices Aloud entered the Kettering Eisteddfod festival in three categories on Saturday 19th March 2012 and won each of those with 2 distinctions and an outstanding. They were also awarded a trophy for best overall performance. The comments given by the adjudicator to both the choir and their Musical Director were complimentary and inspiring.

Hughie James (Musical Director) and Margaret James (Chair) are promoting Voices Aloud as ‘Kettering’s Choir’.  They are currently looking for location opportunities for their photographer to capture the choir at established Kettering places.

Amongst other performances this coming year, Voices Aloud are booked to perform at the Castle Theatre in Wellingborough on 31st May and Kettering's Pleasure Park Bandstand on Saturday 2nd June celebrating the Queen's  Golden Jubilee.

Following the success of their last show, Voices Aloud will be performing once again at the Masque Theatre on the 16th and 17th  November 2012.
